🇯🇵 eSIM in Japan: prices, networks and our pick
Japan's network quality is world-class — the trick is picking a plan on the right network and the right size, because Japan trips range from "Google Maps in Tokyo" to "working from a ryokan in the Alps".
| Our pick | Good for | Plan example | Est. price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo Catalog | Range of sizes, Docomo-based | 10 GB / 30 days | ≈ $18–22 | Get eSIM |
| Nomad Value | Cheaper 2-week trips | 5 GB / 30 days | ≈ $9–12 | Get eSIM |
| Yesim Unlimited | Digital nomads, long stays | Unlimited / 30 days | ≈ $25–35 | Get eSIM |
Prices are estimates (refreshed monthly). Final price — on the provider's site.
Which networks do Japanese eSIMs run on?
NTT Docomo is the coverage king — best choice if you'll leave the Tokyo–Osaka golden route (Hokkaido, Shikoku, rural onsen towns). KDDI/au is excellent in the mountains; SoftBank is strong in cities; Rakuten is the budget network, fine in cities, patchier in the countryside. Premium providers (Airalo, Yesim, Ubigi-family plans) mostly ride Docomo or KDDI.

FAQ
Will my eSIM survive the Shinkansen ride?
Mostly yes — Docomo/KDDI-based plans hold along the Tokaido corridor. Long mountain tunnels cause short drops on every network; the phone reconnects automatically.
Can I use my Japan eSIM for hotspot/tethering?
On most providers yes, hotspot is allowed — handy for a laptop or travel companions. Unlimited plans sometimes restrict or throttle hotspot, check plan details.
Do I get a Japanese phone number?
No — travel eSIMs are data-only unless stated. For ride-hailing or restaurant bookings that need a local number, use apps that accept email or your home number.
eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
Pocket Wi-Fi wins for 3+ devices sharing one connection; eSIM wins on price for solo travelers and on not carrying/charging another gadget. Full comparison in our blog.
