How to install a travel eSIM — in 2 minutes

Works the same whether you buy from Saily, Airalo, Yesim or anyone else. Two installation paths, one settings toggle, zero technician skills required.

Installation steps

Path A — app install (easiest)

  1. Buy the plan in the provider's app (Saily, Airalo, Nomad, Jetpac, Roamless) or on the web.
  2. In the app, tap Install / Activate. iOS hands you to Settings automatically; Android installs the profile in a tap.
  3. Done — the eSIM sits dormant on your phone until you arrive.

Path B — QR code (works for any provider)

  1. After purchase you receive a QR code by email.
  2. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan the code → label it "Travel".
  3. Android (Samsung): Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → scan.
  4. Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add more → scan.
  5. Don't delete the QR email until the trip is over — you may need to re-install on a new phone.
Install before you fly. Installation needs internet (Wi-Fi at home is perfect). You cannot always install reliably at the airport, and never in the air.

First setup: the two settings that matter

  1. After landing: Settings → Cellular → select the Travel line → toggle Turn On This Line.
  2. Data Roaming for the travel line: ON. Yes, really — eSIM plans ride partner networks and only work with roaming enabled for that line. Your home SIM's roaming stays OFF, so no surprise charges.
  3. Set Default Voice Line to your home SIM and Mobile Data to the travel eSIM. Calls and SMS codes keep coming to your regular number while data flows through the eSIM.

Troubleshooting

SymptomFix
No signal after landingAirplane mode off → wait 60 s → toggle the eSIM line off/on. Manual network pick: choose the carrier named in the plan details.
Connected but no internetData Roaming must be ON for the travel line. Also check Mobile Data is set to the eSIM, not your home SIM.
QR code "invalid"QRs are single-use and often expire after installation — contact the provider's chat for re-issue; don't share the QR with a travel buddy.
eSIM stopped mid-tripPlan data may be used up — check usage in the provider's app and top up (top-ups are usually instant).
Wrong APNRare. If the provider lists an APN, enter it in Cellular → eSIM → APN Settings.

Is my phone eSIM-compatible?

Rule of thumb: flagships from 2018 onward support eSIM. Quick list:

  • Apple: iPhone XS / XR (2018) and all newer — including dual-eSIM models; iPhone 14+ in the US is eSIM-only.
  • Samsung: Galaxy S20+ and newer (S20 FE and US carrier-locked models vary), Z Flip/Fold, Note 20+, A54+ on many regions.
  • Google: Pixel 3 and newer (Pixel 3 from some regions/carriers excluded).
  • Others: most recent Huawei (P40+), Motorola Edge/Razr, Oppo Find X, Xiaomi 13+ (regional variants differ).

Not supported: most phones sold in China mainland, older mid-range models, and devices carrier-locked without eSIM enabled. Your phone's Settings → Cellular showing "Add eSIM" is the definitive check.
