Travel eSIM — every question, honest answers

The twelve questions we get most, answered without marketing fluff.

The twelve most-asked questions

What is a travel eSIM, exactly?

A downloadable SIM profile for your phone that contains a prepaid data plan from local networks at your destination. No plastic card, no shop visit — you buy online, scan a QR code, and the plan sits dormant on your phone until you land.

Are eSIMs really cheaper than roaming?

Almost always. Carriers charge $8–12/day for roaming passes; a full week of eSIM data costs $5–25 depending on the country. We ran the numbers in eSIM vs roaming — the gap is often 3–10×.

Will my phone work?

iPhone XS/XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20+ or newer, Pixel 3+, and most flagships since 2018. Open Settings → Cellular — if you see "Add eSIM", you're set. Full list in the compatibility guide.

Do I lose my phone number or WhatsApp?

No. Keep your physical SIM in the phone: it keeps receiving calls, SMS and bank codes. The eSIM is a separate data-only line. WhatsApp stays on your home number.

When should I buy and install it?

Buy 1–2 days before departure, install at home over Wi-Fi. Most plans activate their validity only when you connect abroad, not at installation — but check the plan terms (some activate at install).

What is "unlimited data" really?

Full-speed data without a total GB cap, usually with a fair-use policy: after a daily threshold the provider may slow speeds. For normal tourist use you'll rarely feel it. Compare Holafly and Yesim for unlimited options.

Can I share internet (hotspot)?

Yes, on most plans — including from a laptop or a travel buddy's phone. Some unlimited plans restrict hotspot speed; fixed-GB plans almost always allow full-speed tethering.

Do eSIMs work everywhere — cruises, planes, rural areas?

On land, wherever the local carrier has signal. Cruise ships at sea use satellite networks that no travel eSIM covers; in-flight Wi-Fi is separate too. In remote areas expect the same dead zones locals have.

What if the eSIM doesn't work?

90% of issues are settings: data roaming off, wrong data line, airplane mode. Our troubleshooting table fixes the rest. If it still fails, reputable providers refund unused plans via their support chat.

Is buying an eSIM online safe?

Yes — you're buying from established companies (Airalo: 30M+ users; Saily: Nord Security). Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on their sites/apps. Just buy from the provider itself or a comparison site you trust, not from resellers in messengers.

Can I use one eSIM in several countries?

Yes — buy a regional plan (Europe, Southeast Asia, North America…) or a global plan. Country lists matter: Türkiye is often excluded from Europe plans, so check before buying.

How does eSIM Compass make money?

Affiliate commissions: when you buy through our links, the provider pays us a percentage — your price stays identical. It never affects rankings. Details on our About page.
