eSIM vs international roaming: the real 2026 numbers
We priced one week of "normal tourist" use — maps, messaging, socials, some video calls — in six popular destinations. Method: best daily roaming package from a major US/EU carrier vs a mid-size travel eSIM plan.
The short answer
A travel eSIM saved between $25 and $60 per week in every scenario we priced — typically 3–10× cheaper than roaming. The only cases where roaming wins: EU citizens traveling inside the EU (free "roam like at home" rules) and travelers with generous unlimited-plus-roaming corporate plans.
Week-long trip, 5 GB used — what it cost
| Destination | US carrier roaming (est.) | Travel eSIM (est.) | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇹🇷 Türkiye | $70 (10 days × $7) | $9–14 | ≈ $57 |
| 🇹🇭 Thailand | $70 | $5–8 | ≈ $63 |
| 🇯🇵 Japan | $70 | $12–16 | ≈ $55 |
| 🇦🇪 UAE | $70 | $12–16 | ≈ $55 |
| 🇪🇬 Egypt | $70 | $14–18 | ≈ $54 |
| 🇺🇸 USA (for EU travelers) | €50–65 | $12–18 | ≈ €35–50 |

Why roaming is so expensive
Your home carrier pays a wholesale rate to the foreign network and adds its margin. Travel eSIM providers do the same thing — but they're digital-first: no shops, no sales teams, aggressive wholesale deals, and customers who compare prices. The middle layers simply don't exist.
When roaming still makes sense
- EU residents in the EU: "roam like at home" rules mean your normal plan just works — use it.
- One-day layovers: if you only need maps for 12 hours, a day-pass can be simpler than buying and installing an eSIM.
- Corporate plans with global roaming included: if work pays and it's free to you — done.
The hidden cost of roaming nobody prices in
Bill shock. Roaming's real risk isn't the day pass — it's the $12/day pass you forgot to disable, the "100 MB overage" at $0.10/MB, and the voicemail you didn't know was downloading over cellular. An eSIM is prepaid by definition: when your plan ends, data ends. No surprises, no arguments with customer support in month two.
