The fine print that actually matters

  1. Country list. UK and Switzerland: almost always included. Norway, Iceland: included. Türkiye: the classic exclusion — if it's on your route, buy a plan that lists it or a separate Türkiye eSIM.
  2. Fair use. "Unlimited" plans typically throttle after a daily threshold. If your evenings are Netflix-on-the-train heavy, a fixed 20 GB plan may serve you better than unlimited.
  3. Validity trigger. Most regional plans start counting days at first connection abroad — but some start at purchase. One sentence on the plan page answers it.
  4. Hotspot. Allowed on nearly all fixed-GB plans; sometimes restricted on unlimited ones.

How the local networks work

Regional plans ride partner networks: Orange and SFR in France, Vodafone/Telefónica in Spain, TIM in Italy, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, EE and O2 in the UK. Your phone switches automatically at each border — speeds are what locals get, because you are a local network customer for those 30 days.

Rule of thumb: ≤2 GB needed → buy a small single-country plan in each country. 3–20 GB → regional plan. Streaming nightly or working on the road → unlimited (Holafly/Yesim). Still unsure? Run the calculator.
